Performer Notes
  • The Temptones: Daryl Hall, Barry Glazer, Ken Halpern, Brian Utain.
  • The Temptones' claim to fame is that the lead vocalist and songwriter was a young Daryl Hall of Hall & Oates. The Temptones issued two obscure singles on the Alpine label in 1967, after which Hall met John Oates at a Philadelphia record hop and the two went on to infinitely greater success. This German anthology of the Temptones' work contains just about every inch of tape the group ever recorded, which adds up to an exceedingly slim legacy. There are four versions of the song "Good-Bye." and two versions each of "Girl I Love You" and "Say These Words of Love," which makes for a highly redundant listening experience for anyone who doesn't have an academic interest in Daryl Hall minutiae. On the other hand, no one but the most serious Hall & Oates fans would buy this CD, so the obsessive attention to detail is understandable. Apart from the handful of studio recordings, the rest of the tracks are informal a cappella practice tapes and live performances recorded in low but acceptable fidelity. The Temptones were a polished, white Philly soul group with decent original material but would never have merited a full-length anthology if not for the subsequent work of Daryl Hall. ~ Greg Adams
