Performer Notes
  • Much like Purity Ring's 4AD labelmate Grimes, the Canadian duo makes frosty electro-pop that balances Corin Roddick's precise beats and frosty electronics with Megan James' little-girl-lost vocals. Shrines, the group's debut album, is as sweet as it is ominous and kinetic as it is ethereal, particularly on tracks such as the single "Fineshrine" or "Obedear." While fans of Grimes, Crystal Castles, Cold Cave, and Heartsrevolution will find a lot to like on Shrines, the album proves that Purity Ring have a catchy yet challenging pop agenda of their own.
Professional Reviews
Rolling Stone (p.79) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Instrumentalist Corin Roddick makes atonal friction, and singer Megan James' piercing vocals balance the ominously visceral and the atmospherically delighted."

Q (Magazine) (p.109) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "The slow-burning 'Grandloves' and spectral 'Belispeak' pile on the sonic references...to dizzying, intoxicating effect."
