Synopsis

After nine years of serving in the crack Paratroop Regiment, Reuben (Denzel Washington) returns home. He is older, wiser and chastened by his experiences, a very different man from the thieving, brawling soccer hooligan who signed up on a whim all those years ago. If Reuben had illusions about civilian life, they are soon dispelled when he calls on Fish (Dorian Healy), another ex-para and best friend. Fish lost a leg in the Falklands war and is now languishing, bitter and resentful, in a seedy flat with his wife, Debbie (Stella Gonet), an ever expanding family and mounting debts. Colin (Bruce Payne), another of Reuben's old mates, who has earned a living by some very dangerous 'ducking and diving', is looking for a tough guy, someone who can handle a gun, and offers his old friend the job. Reuben, determined to stay out of trouble, turns him down flat. Colin is not the only one trying to manipulate Reuben, Detective Sergeant Kilcoyne (George Baker), a compassionate policeman, is delighted to discover that the stranger in town is an ex-paratrooper. He tries to win Reuben's help in tracing the killer of Harry, the popular local copper. Reuben tries to steer a lonely path between the outlaws on the one hand and the law on the other. When Reuben hears that, because of a change in the law, he is no longer a British citizen, he erupts in a fit of drunken despair and violence. He calls Colin and agrees to act as the 'heavy' on a drugs deal. Reubens actions will have far reaching consequences.
