About the Author

THOMAS A. LEWIS has lived in, studied, and written about the Shenandoah Valley for three decades. A former editor of Civil War magazine, he contributed regularly to National Wildlife. He is a longtime activist in environmental and historic preservation in the Shenandoah Valley.
