SPIN was founded in 1985 as an alternative to Rolling Stone, which has begun to devote more and more of its pages to mainstream pop culture rather than sticking to music. Spin's mission then, as it is now, was to be the authority on new music and youth culture for a passionate, trend setting audience. It published the first major cover stories on the Beastie Boys, the Cure, Nirvana, the Strokes, the White Stripes, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, to name a few. After two decades of existence, Spin's circulation has climbed to 550,000, making Spin one of America's largest music magazines.
