"Accessible for the lay reader....A visual history of the conflict,
it uses the [Imperial War Museums] collection to present a panorama
of official war photographs, propaganda posters, artworks,
artifacts, letters, and firsthand experiences to give a compelling
overview of the campaign. Our fascination with this conflict shows
no waning."-- "The Mail on Sunday"
"The Battle of the Somme is etched into our minds as the epitome of
all that is ghastly and tragic about war. Mention it and a host of
black and white images, like those on these pages, come to mind."--
"The Sunday Times"
