The first English-language publication of Cobb's major work (published in French, 1961, 1963). Using a plethora of archival sources, the book details the story of the civilian armies of the Revolutionary Terror from April 1793 to March 1794. Composed of urban, highly politicized sans-culottes, these armies were created to obtain food and military equipment for soldiers on the frontiers and for urban populations from reluctant, often antirevolutionary, rural residents. A godsend for Revolutionary scholars, this fine translation belongs in every relevant academic collection and will interest the general reader as well. Highly recommended. William C. McCully, Park Ridge P.L., Ill.
