MARC RAEFF, the Boris Bakhmeteff Professor Emeritus of Russian
Studies at Columbia University, is a scholar of pre-revolutionary
Russia. His books include Understanding Imperial Russia, Origins of
the Russian Intelligentsia, The Well-Ordered Police State, and
Russian Abroad.
