Mr Massie describes, in lavish detail, the magnificent life of the court of St Petersburg: the opulent palaces, the great balls, the fantastic jewels ... But Mr Massie's is by no means only an exotic guidebook ... he has a serious historical thesis to propound ... I have never seen it argued with such wealth of medical and historical detail' Spectator 'A magnificent and intimate picture ... Not only the main characters, but the whole era become alive and comprehensible' Harpers Magazine
