Throughout most of American history, the education of Native Americans has been about "civilizing" them, "converting" them, "immersing" them-that is, changing them. But the philosophy of the "melting pot" does not support diversity. This volume describes this history and provides strategies for combining cultural preservation with modern teaching methods.
