About the Author

Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875-1950) was a popular and prolific American author. He is best known for his creation of the jungle hero Tarzan and the heroic Mars adventurer John Carter, although he produced works in many genres. His first story Under the Moons of Mars was written between July and September 1911, and serialized in the February to July 1912 issues of All-Story Magazine. Its success led him to quit his job as a pencil sharpener wholesaler to take up writing full-time. He quickly completed his next story, which appeared in All-Story Magazine in October 1912 and as a book in 1914: Tarzan of the Apes. He wrote around 70 novels and close to 100 swashbuckling action adventure stories in various genres in the first half of the 20th century.
