About the Author

Verner C. Bickley, after Cardiff University and service in the Royal Navy in India and Ceylon (Sri Lanka), joined the British Colonial Service and served as an Education Officer in Singapore before joining the British Council in Burma, Indonesia and Japan. He later returned to the Overseas Service as Director of the Hong Kong Government's Institute of Language in Education. He is an Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Hong Kong and Chairman of the English-Speaking Union, Hong Kong.
