About the Author

Helen Beaglehole established herself as a writer with stories and novels for children and young adults published in New Zealand and abroad. More recently, she has turned to non-fiction, which she writes from a strong research base with an engaging style and a good sense of narrative. Her eye for the telling detail informs a capacity to paint with a broad brush. Fire in the Hills is a worthy successor to Lighting the Coast: A history of New Zealand's coastal lighthouse system (CUP, 2006) and Always the Sound of the Sea: The daily lives of New Zealand's lighthouse keepers (Craig Potton, 2009).
