About the Author

Ernest Nicholson was educated at Trinity College Dublin and at Glasgow University, where he took his doctorate. He has held academic appointments at Trinity College Dublin and the University of Cambridge, and was Oriel & Laing Professor of the Interpretation of Holy Scripture at Oxford University from 1979-90 when he was elected Provost of Oriel College. He is the author of a number of books on Old Testament subjects. He is a Fellow of the British Academy
which in 2009 was awarded him the Academy's prestigious Burkitt Medal for Biblical Studies.
