Girolamo Cardano (1501-1576) was a doctor, natural philosopher,
mathematician, and astrologer. He taught at Pavia and Bologna,
helped create modern algebra, traveled to Paris and Edinburgh as a
visiting physician of note, was condemned by the Inquisition, and
wrote several books.
