Performer Notes
  • Funkadelic includes: Gary Shider (vocals, guitar); Walter "Junie" Morrison (vocals, keyboards); Rodney "Skeet" Curtis (vocals, bass); George Clinton, Raymond "Stingray" Davis, Lynn Mabry, Ron Ford, Dawn Silva (vocals); Mike "Kidd Funkadelic" Hampton (guitar, keyboards); Bobby Lewis (banjo); Bernie Worrell (keyboards); Cordell "Boogie" Mosson (bass); William "Bootsy" Collins (bass, percussion); Tyrone Lampkin, Jerome Brailey, Larry Fratangelo (drums, percussion).
  • Recorded live at The Monroe Civic Center, Monroe, Louisiana on April 15, 1978 and United Sound, Detroit, Michigan.
  • All tracks have been digitally remastered.
  • A string of hit singles had placed Parliament-Funkadelic on the top of the funk-dance-disco heap by the late '70s, and their 1978 release, ONE NATION UNDER A GROOVE, helped to solidify the group's standing. Now regarded as an all-time classic, the album's timeless grooves and hooks have been used as starting points for numerous hip-hop songs (check out Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, and Ice Cube for starters). The album also proves that funk/disco isn't as disposable as some purists would have you believe. Few albums have inspired as many as ONE NATION UNDER A GROOVE. Strong from beginning to end, it has been often compared to such seminal soulful works as Marvin Gaye's WHAT'S GOING ON.
  • The title track is one of Funkadelic's all-time best and most renowned numbers--easily among the greatest dance singles ever. "Grooveallegiance" brings down the dance intensity a notch or two, but the album soon perks up again with a hard dance rocker ("Who Says A Funk Band Can't Play Rock?") and the coarse humor-fest of "Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad (The DooDoo Chasers)." A live re-reading of the haunting guitar showcase "Maggot Brain" closes the album, with Mike Hampton playing the Eddie Hazel-penned classic quite splendidly.
