2 LPs on 1 CD: HE'S SO FINE (1958)/LONELY TEARDROPS (1959).
Wilson's first two albums (from 1958 and 1959) show that what some have termed his artistic schizophrenia (a seeming inability to distinguish between sweaty R&B and pop schmaltz) was already in place at the beginning. In fact, both of these albums mix proto-soul and rock ("Reet Petite," "Lonely Teardrops") with such white-bread fare as "By the Light of the Silvery Moon" and "Danny Boy," the only link being Wilson's consistently stratospheric vocals. As an interesting historical note, the arrangements on HE'S SO FINE are by Milton Delugg, whose Band With a Thug provided the accompaniments on the 1970s TV cult favorite THE GONG SHOW.
