Avenged Sevenfold would develop and refine their metalcore sound on later releases, but 2001's SOUNDING THE SEVENTH TRUMPET, the band's debut, announced the arrival of a force to be reckoned with. The Southern California outfit's mix of straightforward melodic metal with extreme punk and death metal tendencies creates a sonic wallop that bludgeons from the opener "To End the Rapture" through each of its 13 tracks. The screams of vocalist M. Shadows, along with the thunderous rhythms and furious riffs, can the flay the skin, alternating with more melodic passages and harmonies. This is an early gem from one of the key players in the genre.
