  • This is a classic 1957 Verve set that matches together baritonist Gerry Mulligan and altoist Paul Desmond well before their sterling TWO OF A MIND (1962 on RCA). With bassist Joe Benjamin and drummer Dave Bailey completing the pianoless quartet, Mulligan and Desmond are clearly inspired, battling each other and coming up with consistently witty and inventive solos. Although there are five "originals" on this set (along with "Body and Soul" and Mulligan's "Line for Lyons"), all are based on the chord changes of common songs including "Stand Still" ("My Heart Stood Still") and "Battle Hymn of the Republican" ("Tea for Two"). Mulligan's baritone and Desmond's alto fit together perfectly and they bring out the best in each other, making this a highly recommended set for all jazz collections.
Professional Reviews
JazzTimes (4/97, pp.76-77) - "...a noteworthy tete-a-tete....The album emphasizes the busy, tricky lines that both players ate up with relish....even a non-audiophile...can hear the difference in the Ultradisc..."
